Common rules and requirements

It is time for new Guidelines now, as the document was last updated in 2002 ! To meet the high standards provided by human anaesthesia societies it has been decided to provide different levels of recommendations according to scientific evidence, specialists’ opinion and best practice elsewhere. Standards will provide rules or minimum requirements for the clinical practice of anaesthesia, being considered generally accepted principles of patient management. Hence a departure from standards will be acceptable only in unusual circumstances. Guidelines will be recommendations assisting the practitioner and the owner with decisions about pet health care. They will not be intended as standards or absolute requirements, as their use cannot guarantee any specific outcome, and they will not replace local institutional policies. Guidelines will be supported by a synthesis and analysis of current literature, expert opinion, open forum commentary, and clinical feasibility data. They will be subject to revision as warranted by the evolution of medical knowledge, technology, and practice. Statements will represent the opinions, beliefs, and best medical judgments of ISVRA Scientific Committee. As such, they will not be necessarily subjected to the same level of formal scientific review as ISVRA Standards or Guidelines. Whether to implement some, none, or all of the principles included in ISVRA statements according to sound medical judgment will be matter of opinion. Clinical information will provide the latest information about the practice of anaesthesia.

Standards, Guidelines, Statements and Updated Clinical Information will be discussed by the ISVRA Task Force on Veterinary Anaesthesia (ISVRA-TFVA). Final drafts will be reviewed by ISVRA Scientific Committee, and final documents will be subject to ISVRA members approval.

Rules and Minimum Requirements will be issues to be discussed first by the ISVRA- TFVA, with the aim of regulating the standards in veterinary anaesthesia. Hopefully, final documents will be approved by ISVRA members by April 2014. Approved documents will be submitted for approval to different veterinary associations and/or bodies in order to have common rules and requirements in different countries.
